Ladysmith Black Mambazo
It has been over 20 years since Paul Simon made his initial trip to South Africa and discovered Joseph Shabalala and the other members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a Johannesburg recording studio. Simon was captivated by the stirring sound of bass, alto and tenor harmonies and he incorporated these traditional sounds into his Graceland album, causing an international sensation. The album won Simon and Ladysmith recognition as leaders in world music. Mambazo represents the traditional culture of South Africa and is regarded as the country's cultural emissary at home and around the world. In 1993, at Nelson Mandela's request, Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed at his Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, and again at President Mandela's inauguration in May of 1994. The group is a national treasure of the new South Africa in part because it embodies the musical and cultural traditions formerly suppressed in South Africa. Monday evening at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $38.50, $33.50 and $26.50. Children 12 & under $15.00. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 541.884.LIVE or visit http://www.rrtheater.org/. |
